Gullane is a small village situated in East Lothian on the coast of the Firth of Forth about 15 miles from Edinburgh and 10 minutes drive from the cottage. It is a golfers' paradise and is the home of Muirfield the venue of the 2002 British Open. It also boasts 3 other courses within the village (Gullane Nos 1,2 & 3) as well as Lufness just next door.

Gullane has a magnificent stretch of sandy beach (photo below) which runs for several miles in either direction - popular with birdwatchers, walkers and families.
